The Stock Bird loft.

The Stock Loft.

Starting with the Stock Loft it is a converted garden shed, a typical Australian Loft with a open front facing North with a concret floor and ventilation vents along the floor and roof in the rear wall .

The loft has good air flow around and through the loft which keeps things nice and dry. It measures 2.5 metres long x 1.8 metres wide x 1.8 metres high. The breeding boxs measure 600mm x 300mm x 300mm with a steel mesh front there is 4 of them in the cocks section these are for the trial pairs. The loft has two banks of 10 perches they are of a box type constuction one on the back wall and one on the west wall all perches are mounted 25mm off the walls in the Stock and Racing loft for ease of cleaning.

The Individual Breeding Pens.

The Breeding pens.

I have also built some individual breeding pens, 5 in all. This is because I have started to sell a select few young birds and I felt these pens were needed to ensure the parentage of these young.

The Race Loft.

Young Bird loft or Race Loft.

The Racing Loft is 4.5 metres long x 1.85 metres wide x 1.8 metres high to the false ceiling and has a peaked roof with a vent the full lenght of the ridge this vent is to small sparrows and the like to enter but big enother to let air circulate. It is a timber frame fibro clad building insulated with sizalation, this loft also faces North. It has a concret floor. The perches have 150mm wide trays set under them to make cleaning that little bit easyer and this also helps keep the floor dry and the birds feet clean. The loft is divided in to three sections and a hallway, two of these sections have 20 perches on the back wall and all the perches are a box type perch measuring 300mm x 300mm timber is 100 mm wide x 20 mm thick. The Western end section has fitted with eight nest boxs, so I can race old birds to the nest.

The loft is built more like a American or European type loft than an Australian one , it has a couple of windows in the middle of the front wall which allows in plenty of light and warmth in the winter. Teh Sputnik traps also have a window in the top half to allow more light in.I now use a Benzing Express G2 clock (see photo below) and pads mounted in each of the Sputnik traps.
